Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has made clear his intention to continue leading PAS as its president, a role he has held for over two decades. The veteran politician, who also represents Marang in Parliament, shared that he has no plans to step aside when the party convenes its 71st Muktamar in Kedah this September.

Despite undergoing treatment at the National Heart Institute in June, the 77-year-old declared that his health remains stable and that he remains committed to serving the party for as long as he is able. In a recent public appearance, he expressed a desire to continue his political journey until the very end, stating that lifelong service remains his aspiration.

Although Hadi has not formally submitted his candidacy, his remarks have been widely seen as a strong indication of his intention to defend his position. Within party circles, some had speculated that ongoing health issues might prompt his retirement, especially after hints reported last month suggested he was considering stepping down.

However, PAS vice-president Amar Abdullah has clarified that the presidency remains open for contest. According to party rules, any qualified member is permitted to run, and Hadi’s desire to continue would not prevent others from entering the race. Amar noted that Hadi’s leadership is still valued due to his decades of experience and deep understanding of the party’s ideological direction.

For nearly ten years, PAS has seen no internal challenges to its top two posts, held by Hadi and his deputy, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man. But this year may break that pattern. Sources earlier this year hinted that a contest could be on the horizon—something that hasn’t occurred since the 2015 party elections.

While discussions continue around the presidency, Hadi also addressed questions concerning the leadership structure of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition. He explained that the chairmanship of PN, currently held by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, is a matter for all component parties to decide jointly—not solely PAS.

Within PAS itself, support for Hadi remains strong. Leaders from Terengganu PAS, including assistant secretary Hanafiah Mat, expressed appreciation for Hadi’s openness to member feedback and his cross-community influence, which they believe benefits not only Muslims but also non-Muslim supporters.

As the Muktamar draws near, the question remains whether Hadi’s long-standing leadership will be reaffirmed or if new challengers will emerge to shape the next chapter of the party.
