I am astonished by the news that the investigation papers regarding Hadi Awang's remarks against non-Muslims are still with the AGC since Sept 2023. Cases involving high-profile politicians and elites move at a snail's pace to complete the legal process, while cases involving ordinary people strikes to close at lightning speed.
MP Marang and Racial Remarks
The case involved Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang's claim that non-Muslims are the “roots of corruption” on Facebook in 2022. Police opened investigation papers after numerous reports were lodged against him and took his statement for incitement and abuse of network facilities.
The Home Ministry said the police’s probe of the Marang MP has been completed in a parliamentary written reply. The ministry said in reply to Lim Guan Eng (Bagan-PH) that the investigation papers have been referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers when asked for the status of legal action against Hadi Awang for slandering non-Muslims with that remark.
The PAS president claimed that corruption stemmed from those who gain profits through unlawful means, adding that the majority of those involved in destroying the country’s politics and economy were non-Muslims and non-Bumiputeras.
Consequently, this triggered the filing of at least 28 police reports against Hadi Awang, with Bukit Aman summoning the Marang MP to provide his testimony.
MP Marang and Seditious Remarks
Earlier this month, Bukit Aman investigators questioned Hadi Awang over his remarks in a statement titled “The importance of upholding Islam” on Feb 20, 2024.
His remarks regarding the monarchy, subsequent to a Federal Court ruling to strike down several provisions of Kelantan shariah criminal enactment, courted the displeasure of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor, as they were interpreted as a reaction to the sultan’s earlier speech on Feb 15, 2024, urging all parties to respect the apex court’s ruling.
Sultan Sharafuddin rebuked Hadi Awang for disrespecting the constitution and the Malay rulers, saying his remarks were “highly inappropriate and uncultured” and could lead to division within the Muslim community.
Kepala Batas MP and Fake News
For the case of Kepala Batas MP, Siti Mastura, the investigation papers are also with AGC, the Home Ministry stated in a parliamentary written reply.
Siti Mastura had claimed that Lim Kit Siang was a cousin of Chin Peng and Lee Kuan Yew, and Teresa Kok was a cousin of Betty Chew, Lim Guan Eng's wife during a ceramah on Nov 4, 2023.
Siti Mastura defended her allegations as being based on reference materials that she believed to be legitimate.
MP Permatang Pauh and Inflammatory Remarks
Lim, in his question to the home minister, also asked about action taken against Permatang Pauh MP Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan, who gave his statement to the police in April 2023 for making allegedly inflammatory remarks against non-Muslims.
The home ministry, in its written response, stated that investigation documents regarding Fawwaz had been forwarded to the Penang prosecutor's office.
