Hadi, our Don Quixote from Marang seems to be fighting shadows, UMNO and now Pakatan that he says is made up of “communists and rejecters of the Agong!" #GE15

Hadi Awang reminds us a lot of Don Quixote de La Manca who in the lyrics sung by Andy Williams, 'dreams the impossible dream, fights the unbeatable foe, bears with unbearable sorrow and runs where the brave dares not go'.

This seems to be his quest giving this man a reputation as a modern day Don Hadi de la Marang.

In all fairness, Hadi Awang is a modern-day Don Quixote who is caught fighting lost battles on all fronts, some real and others just figments of his own imagination. His hedonistic or "hadinistic" Quixotism will pass on as another legendary "ism" associated with Hadi before too long.

The term Quixotism based on the legend of Quixote refers to impracticality in pursuit of ideals, especially those manifested by rash, lofty or extravagant ideas and actions.

Or it may also serve to describe an idealism without regard to practicality which really describes Hadi.

In Hadi's case it could also refer to his impulsiveness or his act that might be regarded as quixotic by some of his opponents from across the divide.

Hadi has rejected UMNO or in his own words, postponed cooperation with that party for GE15 because of certain unresolved issues within their respective parties. In Hadi's terms, it is the murkiness surrounding some cases of alleged bribery that made him withdraw from his partnership with UMNO.

He said, "We know there are cases in which a person was accused of receiving bribes, was not guilty but slandered and many more. But it has not been resolved. But because of some turbidity, so we postpone it by taking an approach to clarify the situation." (Malay Mail)

However, some well-informed analysts seem to say it has more to do with disagreements over the allocation of seats rather than murkiness or turbidity over morality issues.

PAS like any political party prefers to contest as many seats as possible. We guess Hadi would love to have Pahang as an addition to his dominance in Trengganu, Kelantan and Kedah. That's one of his impossible dreams perhaps the premiership if he could command a significant majority from these four states.

Anyway, that is no longer feasible because UMNO-BN did not agree and decided to contest in 191 constituencies alone.

Further, to get to fulfil his other dreams Hadi has to fight the impossible foe.

UMNO has proven impossible and he retracts his steps and goes back to BERSATU which seems to be more accommodating, compared to Pakatan Harapan which he now definitely considers a foe.

So, recently our Don Hadi like the legendary Don Quixote has launched a battle against a competitor over imaginary issues like fighting against a windmill that the latter thought was a giant.

One of the often-quoted episodes in the legend of Don Quixote is his fight with the windmills.

The story goes, one day Don Quixote sees some windmills and thinks they are giants. He attacks them but is knocked off his horse. Sancho, his faithful aide tells him they are only windmills, but Don Quixote does not believe him and persisted.

Now our Don Hadi is in an imaginary battle with Pakatan Harapan which he says is made up of communists and people who reject the Agong.

To Hadi, Pakatan is made up of "those who oppose Islam, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons, communists, traitors, those who reject the King, bribe-givers and bribe-takers.” (Focus Malaysia)

Therefore, Hadi chooses to part company with Harapan and fight them instead. Unlike the windmills in Don Quixote's legend Lim Lip Eng incumbent, Kepong MP is a real-life "giant" of the party who is fighting back.

Lim said Hadi did not provide any proof or basis for his “seditious” remarks.

In a press statement, Lim challenged Hadi to file a police report within 48 hours on the latter's allegation because it is indeed a treacherous act of rebellion against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the nation.

Lim said if Hadi did not then he is compelled to apologise to His Majesty and the rakyat for lying. (Focus Malaysia)

Hadi too needs to end another imaginary battle in which he claims that non-Muslims and non-Bumiputeras are the “roots of corruption” in Malaysia.

Since then Hadi was investigated. He was reportedly questioned at the federal police headquarters but no legal action has been yet filed against him.

Another aspect of Hadi's "hadinistic" Quixotism is when he chose to fight against another "giant" the Sarawak Report at a London court.

But the impracticality in pursuit of his ideals, which was seen by many as rash, lofty or even extravagant legal actions was eventually avoided by settling the suit amicably out of court.

Reading about Hadi's dreaming of his impossible dream, endless fighting with unbeatable foes, bearing unbearable sorrows when he loses his battles and going into realms of politics where the braves dare not even go, make us wish politicians like him would focus their attention more on making life better for everyone and our country successful than just wasting their time on fruitless conflicts with fellow politicians.

But then again that's not part of Hadi's impossible dream!

Neither is it the dream of many other politicians. They're more interested in themselves and not the welfare and well-being of the rakyat.
