KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 — PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang is expected to give a statement to police after Bukit Aman contacted him over his claim that the United States sought to help topple the Malaysian government before the 2018 general election.

Hadi’s political secretary Syahir Sulaiman said the PAS president was ready to cooperate, although no date has been fixed for his statement, Berita Harian reported today.

“Yes, Bukit Aman has contacted us. Hadi has been informed and is ready to give the police his full cooperation,” Syahir was quoted as saying.

Three police reports have been lodged over Hadi’s claim that the US offered assistance to topple the government in 2014.

He made the allegation at the 72nd PAS congress in Kelantan, claiming several PAS leaders had been invited to meet US Embassy representatives during then-president Barack Obama’s visit to Malaysia that year.

The US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has denied the allegation, saying its representatives had never offered to help PAS oust the then-Barisan Nasional government.

Chargé d’affaires ad interim David H. Gamble Jr said the United States had never sought to determine Malaysia’s political leadership.
