Following a successful heart procedure at the National Heart Institute (IJN), PAS president Tan Sri Hadi Awang has been receiving well-wishes and prayers from party leaders and members. Gratitude was extended to the medical team by PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, who acknowledged the expertise and commitment demonstrated by the healthcare professionals involved.

Hadi’s son, Dr Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi, earlier confirmed that the procedure went smoothly. Ahead of the operation, Terengganu PAS branches were instructed to hold special prayers for Hadi’s recovery, reflecting the party's deep concern for its long-serving leader.

Although party leaders have shown strong support and optimism about Hadi's health, there remains a noticeable silence on the matter of succession planning within PAS. The 77-year-old Marang MP has been visibly frail in recent years, raising questions about the future leadership direction of the Islamist party.

Tumpat MP Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman, who serves as Hadi’s political secretary, indicated that visits will be restricted following medical advice. Despite these circumstances, party leadership continues to emphasise Hadi’s importance to PAS’ political journey. Vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar stated that Hadi’s guidance remains crucial, particularly in navigating present political challenges and shaping the party's path forward.

Samsuri, who also holds the position of Terengganu Menteri Besar, credited Hadi’s strategic role in securing the party’s recent electoral achievements, including a strong presence in Parliament and state assemblies. He dismissed the idea of a leadership transition at this time, stating that from grassroots members to the top, the party stands firmly behind Hadi.

Still, the absence of open discussion on potential successors has sparked quiet speculation. PAS spiritual leader Datuk Hashim Jasin emphasized that leadership within the party should remain rooted in religious scholarship rather than shift toward technocrats, despite Samsuri’s credentials in engineering. He named Deputy President Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man as someone close to Hadi and potentially fit to lead, should the need arise.

However, for now, party leaders remain unified in prayer and support, steering clear of any public conversation about leadership change. As long as Hadi remains willing and able, the question of succession appears to be one the party prefers to leave unanswered.
