The upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu (KKB) by-election in Selangor has sparked reminders among UMNO loyalists, urging them to avoid a fate similar to what happened to their political power in Singapore during the 1950s. PAS president Tan Sri Hadi Awang, in a rare public appearance on the political scene, highlighted the historical context behind UMNO's loss of political power in Singapore and drew parallels to the current political landscape in Malaysia.
Hadi recalled the era when Tengku Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Jumat, the deputy chief minister of Singapore from 1956 to 1959 and the founder of UMNO in the republic, witnessed the rise of the People's Action Party (PAP). He emphasized how PAP gradually sidelined Malay candidates, eroding the political influence of Malays in Singapore. Drawing a comparison, Hadi warned that DAP, akin to PAP, is employing a similar strategy in Malaysia.
He expressed concerns over DAP's Malaysian Malaysia agenda, which aims to blur racial distinctions and promote a singular Malaysian identity. Hadi cautioned that such an agenda could undermine the diversity created by Allah SWT and lead to the erosion of the Malay race's political significance. Despite his skepticism about DAP's ability to completely erase racial identities, he underscored the need for vigilance against DAP's political maneuvers, which he described as subtle and cunning.
Hadi also criticized DAP's attempt to equate Islam with other religions in Malaysia, warning that it could jeopardize Islam's position as the Federal religion. He referenced the controversy surrounding the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), which sparked protests due to concerns about its potential impact on Islam and the special privileges of Malays and other indigenous groups.
Highlighting the difference in political approaches, Hadi contrasted the collaborative negotiations among political parties like PAS, UMNO, MCA, and MIC before Merdeka with DAP's purported extremist agenda aimed at seizing power through divisive tactics. He emphasized the need to resist such attempts, which he believes could lead to chaos in the country.
In essence, Hadi's remarks serve as a cautionary tale, reminding UMNO supporters of the historical precedent in Singapore and urging them to remain vigilant against similar threats in Malaysia. His message underscores the importance of preserving racial and religious identities while rejecting extremist ideologies that seek to undermine the country's harmony and stability. As voters prepare for the KKB by-election, Hadi's words serve as a timely reminder of the stakes involved and the need for informed and responsible decision-making.
