KUALA LUMPUR — PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has urged party members in Perlis to remain loyal to the central leadership following the political crisis that led to a change in the state government.
In an open letter to state party members, Hadi reaffirmed that PAS Central, elected at the party’s annual general assembly, holds the highest administrative authority under the party constitution and is responsible for appointments at all levels, including the state commissioner and Menteri Besar.
“PAS Central, elected and appointed by the party’s annual general assembly, has the authority to carry out the highest administration in PAS,” he said, citing Clause 39 of the party constitution.
He added that the party’s Ulama Council does not handle administrative matters, unless they conflict with the party’s highest principles, and is responsible for ensuring PAS adheres to Islamic teachings based on the Quran, Sunnah and established scholarly consensus.
Hadi said the central leadership had conducted tabayyun, or verification, after receiving complaints from Perlis soon after the party’s electoral victory. Representatives from PAS Central were sent to the state, and local leaders were summoned to headquarters to present their complaints directly.
On allegations of moral misconduct, he said no credible witnesses were produced and described the claims as stories eventually traced to their source. He also criticised dissatisfaction among certain leaders over appointments and state-level decisions, including reports of unethical lobbying during party meetings.
“Ultimately, our confidence in the PAS Perlis commissioner who was appointed remains very high,” he said. “What happened was a failure to show loyalty to the party and obedience to leaders appointed by PAS Central, without valid justification.”
The open letter comes after the Perlis political upheaval that saw former Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli resign when eight assemblymen — five from Bersatu and three from PAS, withdrew their support.
The PAS trio, Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong) and Saad Seman (Chuping), were sacked from the party following the mutiny. Bersatu’s Abu Bakar Hamzah was later appointed as the new Menteri Besar.
The episode also reverberated at the federal level, prompting Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to resign as Perikatan Nasional chairman. The post remains vacant.— February 11, 2026
