In a recent political gathering, PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang emphasized the importance of achieving political dominance over the personal religious goals of performing Umrah and Hajj. Addressing a Perikatan Nasional (PN) event recently, Hadi encouraged the Muslim majority in Malaysia to shift their focus from religious pilgrimages to the pursuit of Islamic political leadership.
Referencing historical Islamic events, Hadi drew attention to the period when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was prevented from performing Umrah until the Treaty of Hudaibiyah was signed. He interpreted this as a lesson in prioritizing strategic political action over spiritual rituals when necessary. In his view, political success is a matter of urgency and a crucial step for ensuring that Islamic values guide governance.
Hadi suggested that the Islamic community should embrace a proactive approach to leadership, arguing that Muslims have a responsibility to ensure that political authority aligns with Islamic principles. He criticized current tendencies among some Muslims to focus on performing religious obligations abroad while neglecting the political needs of their own country.
In his address, Hadi also expressed frustration with political opponents, particularly former PAS members who changed parties, suggesting that their lack of understanding about Islamic leadership made them susceptible to aligning with parties like the DAP. He implied that such alignments stem from a gap in religious and political literacy.
The PAS leader reinforced the idea that Muslims in Malaysia, where they form the majority, have the rightful role to lead the nation. He clarified that this leadership should not be seen as excluding non-Muslims, but rather as a reflection of Malaysia’s demographic and religious makeup. His remarks highlighted a belief in maintaining Islamic leadership at the highest levels of government while acknowledging the presence and rights of minority groups.
Also in attendance at the event were prominent leaders from PAS and BERSATU, reflecting the unity within the Perikatan Nasional coalition on this ideological stance.
