Hake and coley sustainability ratings are cut amid overfishing fears

  • The Marine Conservation Society has downgraded European hake caught in the North Sea, Celtic Seas, and Bay of Biscay from green to amber on its Good Fish Guide due to growing fishing pressure and declining stocks.
  • Coley landed in key UK fishing areas has been downgraded to a red rating because of falling populations and a lack of recovery plans, whilst North-east Arctic coley suffered downgrades and Icelandic coley retained its green status.
  • Icelandic haddock has dropped from green to amber after catches exceeded scientific advice, though haddock sourced across the North Sea, Skagerrak, and Scottish waters remains green-rated for consumers.
  • Positive updates in the guide include a new green rating for Atlantic bluefin tuna in UK waters following improved long-term fishery management, alongside rating upgrades for some North Sea herring and continued green status for Jersey lobster.
  • Representatives from the Marine Conservation Society emphasised that consumers should diversify their seafood choices to avoid species under threat, while calling on the UK government to enforce stronger management to recover declining fisheries.
