The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) is poised to enhance the country's halal ecosystem by streamlining its procedures and fostering collaboration with various stakeholders. This initiative follows a productive meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, where the significance of the halal certification system in attracting investments and boosting exports was highlighted.
Datin Hakimah Mohd Yusoff, Jakim's Director General, underscored that the halal certification is a crucial element for enhancing Malaysia's competitive edge in the global halal market. She stated, “The halal certification system is key to not only attracting investments but also expanding our exports and solidifying Malaysia’s reputation on the international stage.”
During her remarks to the New Straits Times, Hakimah welcomed the Prime Minister's call for improved strategic cooperation among stakeholders. This includes federal and state government agencies, private sector players, and statutory bodies, all working towards creating a more cohesive halal ecosystem. “This collaboration will help us optimize resources, strengthen our halal framework, and promote sustainable growth, both nationally and globally,” she added.
Prime Minister Anwar emphasized the economic potential of the halal sector, noting that it requires concerted efforts among federal agencies to further energize Malaysia's halal industry. He pointed out the necessity of coordinated actions between Jakim and enforcement agencies to counteract deviant teachings and ideologies that could undermine the integrity of the halal sector.
In a related issue, Jakim is working closely with police to address concerns regarding the activities of Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISB) Sdn Bhd. Joint operations have revealed evidence linked to the controversial Aurad Muhammadiyah teachings, which have been banned by state fatwas since the 1990s. Hakimah indicated that state authorities are currently assessing possible legal actions against those involved, in accordance with these fatwas.
The push for a robust halal ecosystem is not only vital for domestic economic growth but also positions Malaysia as a leader in the global halal market. With the increasing global demand for halal products, Jakim's efforts to streamline procedures and enhance collaborations will be essential in meeting these opportunities.
