The supplier of Shake and Bake Café’s pre-packed chicken ham and cheese sandwiches has clarified that the chicken ham used in the product is certified halal. This assurance comes amid public concern over the halal status of the sandwiches, which led convenience store chain KK Mart to suspend sales of the product.
In a statement reported by Free Malaysia Today (FMT), the supplier confirmed that all chicken slices in the sandwiches are halal-certified by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim). The ingredients, as outlined by the supplier, include bread, cheese, and the certified chicken ham.
The controversy escalated after Jakim announced that the sandwiches and their manufacturer lacked valid halal certification. Additionally, Jakim pointed out that the unauthorised use of the halal logo on the product label violated the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, specifically the provisions on halal certification and marking.
The supplier, however, maintained its stance, stating:
“Shake and Bake confirms that the chicken ham used in its sandwiches has halal certification from Jakim. We also confirm that on January 10, 2025, officers from the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, along with Jakim representatives, inspected our factory, which is under investigation. We pledge full cooperation with the authorities.”
Following these developments, KK Mart suspended all business dealings with the supplier and pulled Shake and Bake’s sandwiches from its outlets nationwide. The retail chain’s decision reflects its commitment to maintaining consumer trust and compliance with halal certification standards.
Meanwhile, Jakim reiterated its stand against the unauthorized use of the halal logo, emphasizing that such actions mislead consumers and undermine the integrity of Malaysia’s halal certification system. The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has already begun legal proceedings against the manufacturer.
This situation highlights the growing sensitivity among Malaysian consumers regarding halal certification and the importance of transparency in the food industry. It serves as a reminder to manufacturers to strictly adhere to regulatory guidelines to avoid legal complications and maintain public confidence.
As investigations proceed, consumers and retailers alike await further updates from Jakim and the authorities on the final resolution of the case.
