The Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (JAKIM) has officially recognized 88 foreign halal certification bodies across 49 countries as of May, signaling the country's growing influence in the global halal industry. These nations include major economic players like Japan, China, South Korea, and Australia, reflecting the increasing demand for halal-certified products in diverse markets.

Datuk Dr. Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Religious Affairs, shared insights on the rising global interest in obtaining JAKIM’s certification. "Countries recognize the business potential in halal products, and many more markets remain untapped," he explained during the 'Halal Food: World Taste' event. According to him, the international confidence in JAKIM's rigorous standards drives this surge, with many nations now seeking official recognition. He further anticipates more countries will join the list as the halal sector continues to expand.

Beyond international certification, JAKIM is also addressing domestic issues related to counterfeit halal labels. Working closely with Malaysia's Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), JAKIM is committed to cracking down on fake halal certifications, particularly those involving repackaged goods. Dr. Mohd Na’im emphasized that while enforcement falls under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, JAKIM will provide full support in ensuring compliance. "Public complaints about counterfeit certificates are investigated, and we collaborate with KPDN for enforcement," he said, noting that the situation remains largely under control.

To further safeguard consumers, JAKIM is developing a specialized mobile application that will allow users to easily verify the halal status of products. This tool aims to combat the prevalent issue of fake certifications in smaller supermarkets, grocery stores, and wholesale markets. Dr. Mohd Na’im warned that repackaged products, even those originally halal-certified, must reapply for certification to maintain their halal status in the new packaging.

This comprehensive approach highlights Malaysia’s leadership in the global halal market while ensuring integrity in local enforcement.
