KOTA KINABALU: Over half of Sabah's roads have exceeded their design lifespan and require full rehabilitation, not just routine maintenance, said Deputy Chief Minister and Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya.
Rising traffic, overloading, and weather damage have worsened road conditions, prompting the State to allocate RM285 million this year to upgrade four major roads using Cold In-Place Pavement Recycling (CIPR).
Federal and State maintenance funds total RM1.1 billion in 2025, with multiple concessionaires and contractors assigned for different road types.
Shahelmey acknowledged over 2,000 non-conformance reports issued last year, all of which were rectified. A request has been submitted to the Federal Government for additional funding to upgrade Federal Roads in Sabah.
