Hamidin elected as FIFA Council member

KUALA LUMPUR – Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin has been selected as a FIFA Council member for the 2023-2027 term.

The selection was made at the 33rd Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress which took place at the Gulf Convention Centre in Bahrain.

Hamidin will be joined by Kohzo Tashima from Japan, Mariano Areneta Jr. (Philippines), Sheikh Hamad Khalifa AA Al Thani (Qatar), and Yasser H. Almisehal (Saudi Arabia), who will make the AFC’s representatives in the FIFA Council.

Based on the election, Hamidin received 30 votes, while Tashima had 39, Areneta (34), Sheikh Hamad (40), Yasser (35).

Two other candidates who did not make the cut were South Korea’s Mong Gyu Chung with 19 votes and China’s Du Zhaocai had 19 votes.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Salman Ebrahim Al Khalifa won a new four-year term as AFC president, a position he has held since 2013.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah was the first Malaysian to serve in the FIFA Council following his majesty’s victory in the 2015 Congress, while the late Tan Sri Hamzah Abu Samah served as the FIFA vice-president for eight years from 1982 to 1990. – The Vibes, February 1, 2023
