Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin expresses confidence that Parti Keluarga Malaysia can be officially registered in time for a general election this year.

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has expressed confidence that the Parti Keluarga Malaysia (PKM) could be officially registered in time should a general election be called this year.

The Opposition leader and Larut MP said that while the chairman of Perikatan Nasional is prepared, his role would be to assist the coalition in ensuring readiness.

“I feel that, for Perikatan Nasional, the chairman is ready. It’s just that I will help.

“What is important to me is that I can assist Perikatan Nasional to restore the people’s trust in the leadership that has already been arranged,” he told reporters after an iftar event here today.

Among those in attendance were representatives from Perikatan Nasional, MIC, Hamzah’s supporters as well as PKM founder Khairi Jaya.

When asked about the timeline for PKM’s registration ahead of the polls, Hamzah said he believed it could be completed in time, though he did not provide a specific timeframe.

However, when pressed on what his role in PKM would be, including whether he would assume the presidency, Hamzah remained tight-lipped.

On whether he could risk losing his seat under the anti-party-hopping law, Hamzah said he could not comment in detail yet, stressing the need for careful planning before making any announcements.

“That’s why I cannot answer this matter, because I want to go into detail.

“So that all followers and supporters, when they follow me, know which path is the most suitable,” he said.

On Saturday, Hamzah revealed that he is still awaiting the outcome of an appeal to register PKM with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

The former deputy president of Bersatu said that PKM’s earlier registration process did not proceed due to several issues.

He added that the party has since filed an appeal with the ROS and settled all related payments.

“It’s not that it failed, but when the time came, there were certain matters that caused the party not to proceed then. They have since filed an appeal,” he said.

Earlier reports said Hamzah had confirmed he would take over PKM in the near future.

He added that discussions had been held with key stakeholders regarding joining the party.
