Criticism has surfaced over the “Bangun KL” initiative, but Hannah Yeoh has pushed back, saying the effort should not be dismissed so quickly.
Speaking at an event in Bandar Tun Razak, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Federal Territories clarified that the initiative is not a government programme, but one driven by the private sector.
‘Not a government initiative’
Reported by The Star, Yeoh explained that the campaign, including its tagline, was introduced by Zus Coffee, and does not involve any cost to the government.
“The initiative and the tagline ‘Bangun KL’ are by Zus Coffee Group, and there is no cost to the government,” she said.
She added that the government is open to working with any party that aims to benefit the public.
“We work with anyone who wants to benefit the people,” she said.
Discounted coffee to encourage earlier commutes
Launched on April 9, the initiative involves 250 Zus Coffee outlets across Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya offering discounted drinks.
The promotion is available to customers who place orders through the brand’s app between 7am and 8am.
During its launch, Yeoh said the effort is aimed at encouraging behavioural change, using incentives and collaboration between sectors to help ease traffic congestion in the city.
‘Better than doing nothing’
Despite its intentions, the campaign has drawn criticism online, with some questioning whether discounted coffee can realistically reduce peak hour traffic.
Responding to this, Yeoh defended the initiative, saying that even small efforts are worth trying.
It is better than doing nothing. If you want to criticise any programme, I’m sure anyone can find something wrong with every single one,” she said.
Traffic congestion is a global issue
Yeoh also pointed out that traffic congestion is not unique to Kuala Lumpur, noting that many cities around the world face similar challenges.
She said the government is exploring multiple approaches, including encouraging work from home arrangements in response to rising fuel prices.
At the same time, she highlighted ongoing efforts by the Transport Ministry to improve public transportation.
If everybody does their part, the traffic situation will improve,” she said.
