KUALA LUMPUR - Any bid to topple a legitimate, fair administration is strictly forbidden under Islamic law, a prominent Kelantan religious scholar declared, comparing modern instigators to the historic, extremist Khawarij faction.
Syeikh Wazir Che Awang Al-Makki, adviser to the Kelantan Association of Pondok Institutions, delivered the blunt verdict during the Sebarkan Salam@Kota Bharu Berselawat programme at Masjid Muhammadi, directly framing attempts to unseat Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as a violation of Islamic governance principles.
“Overthrowing a just government is haram in Islam. Those who seek to do so are acting like the Khawarij,” Syeikh Wazir said, evoking the sect that famously revolted against the rule of Saidina Uthman and Saidina Ali.
Such hostile maneuvers, he stressed, should never be entertained—least of all against the current administration led by Anwar.
The high-profile gathering saw Anwar sharing the stage with Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud, alongside Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan and his deputy, Marhamah Rosli.
Echoing the warning, fellow pondok scholar Abdul Rahman Omar rebuked persistent efforts by detractors to derail the administration, calling the agitation a blatant sign of ingratitude toward national stability.
The head (mudir) of Pondok Aur Cina reminded critics that ultimate political authority is divinely sanctioned, with electoral mechanisms and popular mandates merely acting as instruments of that will.
Abdul Rahman concluded with a prayer for the Prime Minister’s longevity and sustained leadership, urging that the country remain steady so the public can continue reaping the dividends of peace. - November 1, 2026
