Malaysia has come remarkably close to eradicating hardcore poverty, with the rate dropping to a mere 0.09 percent, according to the latest Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). The findings, launched by Economy Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan in Putrajaya, also revealed that the nation’s average monthly household income has risen to RM9,155 in 2024 — a clear sign of improving living standards and effective economic policies.
The minister described the achievement as a key milestone for the country, marking significant progress in reducing poverty and bridging income disparities. Between 2019 and 2024, Malaysia’s average household income increased from RM7,901 to RM9,155, reflecting a 3.8 percent annual growth since 2022. This upward trend underscores the government’s consistent efforts to strengthen the economy and ensure that growth benefits citizens across all income levels.
In addition to the rise in income, the report highlighted a steady decline in absolute poverty, which fell to 5.1 percent in 2024 compared to 6.2 percent two years earlier. Income inequality also improved, with the Gini coefficient narrowing to 0.390 from 0.404 in 2022 — the lowest in recent years. These indicators point to a more balanced distribution of wealth and a gradual closing of the gap between rich and poor households.
Amir Hamzah emphasized that poverty eradication must extend beyond short-term relief or financial aid. He noted that lasting change depends on empowering individuals through education, job creation, and social mobility initiatives that equip Malaysians to handle rising living costs and achieve self-sufficiency.
Under the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13), the government is expected to intensify its efforts to eliminate poverty in all regions, with a focus on inclusivity and equitable growth.
The nation’s economic fundamentals also appear strong, with GDP expanding by 5.1 percent in 2024, unemployment declining to 3.2 percent, and inflation contained at 1.8 percent. Total trade reached RM2.9 trillion, reflecting Malaysia’s resilience and competitiveness in the global market.
Amir Hamzah further noted that the government’s central database, PADU, will be instrumental in refining social policies and ensuring that assistance reaches those most in need. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining growth and widening opportunities, stressing that no Malaysian should be left behind in the country’s journey toward shared prosperity.
