Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited Jordan, focusing on humanitarian health and mental health support for communities affected by conflict and displacement

AMMAN: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle arrived in Jordan for a two-day visit focused on humanitarian health and mental health support for vulnerable communities.

Their office stated the visit would centre on communities affected by conflict and displacement.

The couple first visited the Zaatari refugee camp, home to some 45,000 Syrian refugees.

There, they met young refugees and joined children in activities like football, art and music, according to a post by the UN refugee agency UNHCR.

Jordan opened the Zaatari camp north of Amman in 2012, a year into the war in neighbouring Syria.

The UN says around 680,000 Syrians were registered in Jordan from 2011 onwards, though the kingdom says it welcomed 1.3 million.

Some 200,000 Syrians returned to their country after the ouster of former president Bashar al-Assad in late 2024.

Invited by the World Health Organization, the couple also visited a hospital in Amman.

They met with children evacuated for medical reasons from Gaza, ravaged by more than two years of war between Israel and Hamas.

Prince Harry said in a statement released by the WHO that they remain deeply committed to advancing awareness and reducing stigma around mental health.

He added they are committed to expanding access to mental health support for all those affected by conflict and crisis.

Meghan and Harry stepped back from royal duties and moved to California in 2020 over rifts with the royal family.

Harry has long blamed the British press for the death of his mother Diana, citing concerns about Meghan’s treatment.
