In many homes across Malaysia and around the world, air conditioners run almost daily — cooling our spaces while silently producing something most of us overlook: water.

That dripping sound from the small pipe connected to your air conditioner is not a leak — it’s condensation. As the air conditioner cools warm, humid air, water vapor condenses on the evaporator coils and drains out. Most of the time, this water is simply wasted, flowing into drains or seeping into the ground.

But what if we told you that this "wastewater" can actually be harvested and put to good use?

How Much Water Can You Collect?

Depending on the size of your air conditioner and the humidity of the air, a single unit can generate 5 to 20 liters of water per day. Multiply that by several units in an office or apartment block, and you have a significant amount of usable water that would otherwise go to waste.

Practical Uses of Air Conditioner Water

While not suitable for direct drinking without proper treatment, harvested AC water is essentially distilled water and can be repurposed in many ways:

  • Watering plants – Ideal for gardens, potted plants, and lawns.
  • Cleaning – Perfect for mopping floors, washing cars, or outdoor cleaning.
  • Household appliances – Can be used in steam irons, humidifiers, or batteries where distilled water is needed.
  • Emergency storage – With basic filtration, AC water can serve as a backup during water cuts.

Environmental Benefits

  • Reduces water wastage – Every drop saved means less strain on treated municipal water supplies.
  • Supports sustainability – Encourages households and businesses to think creatively about resource use.
  • Promotes urban resilience – In water-stressed cities, even small-scale harvesting can make a difference.

Safety Notes

Before using AC water for any purpose:

  • Avoid direct drinking unless the water is filtered and sterilized, as the pipes and collection containers may introduce bacteria.
  • Clean the collection container regularly to prevent mosquito breeding.
  • Avoid using on edible plants (like leafy greens or herbs) unless treated, to reduce contamination risk.

A Simple Step Towards Sustainable Living

By placing a clean container under your AC drainpipe — as seen in the photo above — you can easily start collecting this overlooked water resource. Some households even connect the pipe directly to storage tanks or irrigation systems for greater efficiency.

In a time when water shortages and climate change are becoming urgent challenges, harvesting AC water is a small but impactful step towards sustainability. It reminds us that solutions to big problems can start right at home — sometimes, just by noticing the drops at our doorstep.
