Harvey Weinstein says ‘I do have remorse’ at sentencing in NYC after retrial

  • Disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a felony sex crime against former TV production assistant Miriam Haley following a legal saga spanning over six years.
  • The sentencing comes after New York's highest court overturned Weinstein's original 2020 conviction in 2024 due to prejudicial testimony, leading to a retrial where a jury re-convicted him of a first-degree criminal sex act against Haley.
  • Before the judge handed down the sentence, Haley addressed the court, saying: “Having been sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein has had a devastating effect on my life and sense of security that may never go away. Making the decision to speak up will have me looking over my shoulder for years to come. It’s a life sentence for me.”
  • Minutes later, Weinstein apologized in court to those he may have hurt. “I do have remorse for Miriam Haley’s pain, but I have to reiterate my innocence,” he told the judge while seated in a wheelchair.
  • Manhattan prosecutors had requested a 20-year prison sentence, whereas Weinstein's defense team advocated for a shorter sentence, highlighting the 74-year-old's failing health and multiple medical conditions, including blood cancer and congestive heart failure.
