Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Sunday expressed concern over the growing drug menace in Punjab, urging the state government to take stronger action against those responsible for spreading narcotics.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Saturday launched the “Soorma” (warrior) campaign, calling it as the next phase in the state’s anti-drug movement.

Speaking to the media in Ludhiana, Saini praised the Punjab Government’s “Soorma” campaign, which honours people who quit drugs. However, he stressed that the government must also disclose what steps had been taken to punish drug peddlers.

“It’s good that people who shunned drugs were given the ‘Soorma’ tag, but the government should also reveal what efforts were made to punish those spreading the drug menace. If any steps were taken in the past four years to eliminate drugs, they should be made public,” he said.

Saini warned that drug abuse was rapidly increasing in Punjab, causing immense hardship to families and worsening the law and order situation.

Speaking at a special programme at the Sutlej Club, he highlighted PM Narendra Modi’s monthly “Mann Ki Baat” broadcast, which, he said, inspired society by showcasing individuals working selflessly for the community.

Saini also paid tribute to Sant Kabir Das on his birth anniversary, recalling his message of eliminating social evils.
