Kota Kinabalu: Liberal Democratic Party Vice President David Ong urged the government to adopt the plastic bottle buyback programme to address plastic pollution in the State.

“This is a simple yet effective way to get plastic off our streets and into recycling centres,” he said, adding that under this system, people can return used plastic bottles and get 5 sen or 10 sen per bottle in return.

AdvertisementHe said several countries had already proven the success of such programmes.

“Germany recycles 97 per cent of its plastic bottles using a deposit system. Norway has over 90 per cent recycling success. Japan turns its plastic bottles into new ones, recycling more than 85 per cent.
