Food security is always the top concern for the unfortunate communities. It is only natural to have a number of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) focused on food to help achieve SDG 2, "Zero Hunger."
Kembara Kitchen, Street Feeders of KL, Kechara Soup Kitchen, Pertiwi Soup Kitchen, and Pit Stop Community Cafe are some of the non-profit organisations that assist the community in need. One major issue perhaps for the poor to worry less about, while juggling jobs, children, and security.
Other NGO/social impact entities you may join that aim to assist in a variety of ways.
1. Toy library
The NGO provides a platform for toy centres or libraries for the children in mainly less fortunate areas to play with their friends. Toy library promotes play in safe, healthy, and happy communities. The NGO believes every child has the right to play and they support child rights in Malaysia as well.
Samaritans or organisations can donate toys at their hub SS3 Re:Play Toy Hub & Toy Library. You can help clean, sort, and repack them. They will distribute to marginalised communities such as PPR residents and Orang Asli children.
They hope this initiative will somehow help the children grow in all aspects of their learning and development. Through play, they can socialise, display positive emotions, and be imaginative.
2. EPIC
Epic Homes aim to bridge the urban-rural divide by constructing homes for disadvantaged communities, with a current focus on Peninsular Malaysia's indigenous people, the Orang Asli(OA).
Orang Asli will have a safe place, a shelter, and a feeling of belonging that they can call their own homes.
You can volunteer to be a part of the construction group. But you have to attend a workshop as a beginner. Most homes built, however, are CSR driven, and their staff will join with the OA community to build.
There is a window of opportunity, but you need to regularly check their schedule.
3. OrphanCare Foundation
A non-profit organisation dedicated to providing institutionalised children and unplanned, at-risk newborn babies the opportunity to grow up in the care of a loving family.
The foundation is well-known for their baby hatch initiative.
Baby hatch is a safe place for babies whose birth mothers have decided or could not keep the babies after giving birth due to personal reasons and mainly unplanned pregnancies.
Their tagline is every child needs a family.
4. Buku Jalanan Chow Kit
The NGO creates space for the kids around Chow Kit to learn and play in a safe environment. On Friday and Sunday, volunteers can help with their homework.
They let volunteers come teach these kids subjects like mathematics and English.
With their own program, the NGO teaches displaced children, such as stateless children or children without legal documents, in homeschool-style classes. They believe that every child has the right to an education, even if they are unable to attend public schools.
That’s how serious they are about education. The safe space also provides some sense of belonging to kids and helps them avoid negative social influence.
5. Friends of Taman Tugu
Taman Tugu is a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, with collaborations from various partners, private entities, and civil society organisations (NGOs).
They have partnership programmes with, to name a few, Uniqlo, Canon, and the Free Tree Society Nature Education Program that is sponsored by CIMB Islamic Bank.Taman Tugu is loved by outdoor communities and nature devotees. We need more awareness and advocacy to educate the public about the importance of the environment.
They also organise recreational sessions, public talks, nature education programs, and tree planting activities, usually held on weekends. Check out their updates on social media.
Their missions pave the way towards increasing public awareness and advocacy. You could volunteer for one of these organisations or participate in their programmes when they are broadcast on social media.
If you are able, you may contribute your time, energy, and money to your favourite cause. At the end of the day, you are assisting or supporting underserved communities and virtuous causes.
