Hayden Panettiere death latest: Police release statement as co-stars pay tribute to Heroes and Nashville actress

Hayden Panettiere, who became a household name as a teenager for her role in Heroes and later starred in Nashville and the Scream films, has died at age 36.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” Panettiere’s father, Skip, said in a statement to ABC News. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

No cause of death has been shared, but police in Greenville, South Carolina, said officers “responded to a report of an unresponsive female” at around 1:50 pm ET on Sunday (August 16).

“Upon arrival, medical assistance was administered; however, the individual, later identified as Hayden Panettiere, was pronounced deceased at the scene,” they said in a statement.

They added that the case is under investigation, but a preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.

Panettiere’s breakthrough role came with NBC’s sci-fi drama Heroes, where she played Claire Bennett, a high-school cheerleader with the power to regenerate from injuries, from 2006 to 2010.

She followed Heroes with Nashville, playing aspiring country singer Juliette Barnes from 2012 to 2018. The performance earned her two Golden Globe nominations.

Panettiere’s New York Times bestselling memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, was published in May this year, in which she looked back at her childhood in Hollywood and her experiences with addiction, postpartum depression, abusive relationships, and the loss of custody of her daughter, Kaya, whom she shares with former heavyweight boxer Wladimir Klitschko.

“I’m crushed. I knew the wild little blonde. Was she nine? Ten? I was eighteen... She knew her lines and everyone else’s. Her intelligence was astonishing,” she continued.

“We’d connect on and off over the years, like the cousin in the family reunion who got famous and life moved her away—but I always felt such joy seeing her when we were lucky enough to cross paths... I don’t know how to process this. I am praying for you to know the peace of God now and always.”

Hayden Panettiere was vocal about her history of opioid addiction – and said she was 15 when she was first offered drugs.

In a new interview with People in 2022, the actor said she was given “happy pills” to make her “peppy before red carpet interviews.

“I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction,” she said.

Panettiere was able to stay off drugs and alcohol while filming, but said that “things kept getting out of control” off-set. “As I got older, the drugs and alcohol became something I almost couldn’t live without.”

After giving birth to her daughter in 2013, she had postpartum depression, and started drinking again – and was soon admitted to hospital for jaundice.

“Doctors told me my liver was going to give out,” she said. “I was no longer a 20-year-old who could just bounce right back.”

Eventually, she was able to “get over the hump” of her addiction, and entered rehab for eight months in 2020.

“It’s an everyday choice, and I’m checking in with myself all the time,” Panettiere added. “But I’m just so grateful to be part of this world again, and I will never take it for granted again.”

Panettiere cut professional ties with Vogel at the age of 19, while working on Heroes. “All I wanted was a dynamic that didn’t involve contracts, producers, boho tops, or drinking wine at industry parties,” she wrote in her memoir earlier this year.

According to the actor, Vogel “picked up her purse, clenched her jaw, and looked straight at me”, telling her: “You owe me.”

Panettiere told The Independent she “wasn’t surprised by her reaction” but called it “heartbreaking” as “having a normal relationship wasn’t something that interested her”.
