Hayden Panettiere death latest: Police release statement after Heroes and Nashville star dies aged 36

Hayden Panettiere, who became a household name as a teenager for her role in Heroes and later starred in Nashville and the Scream films, has died aged 36.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” Panettiere’s father, Skip, said in a statement to ABC News. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

No cause of death has been shared, but police in Greenville, South Carolina, said officers “responded to a report of an unresponsive female” at around 1:50 pm ET on Sunday (16 August).

“Upon arrival, medical assistance was administered; however, the individual, later identified as Hayden Panettiere, was pronounced deceased at the scene,” they said in a statement.

They added that the case is under investigation, but a preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.

Panettiere’s breakthrough role came with NBC’s sci-fi drama Heroes, where she played Claire Bennet, a high-school cheerleader with the power to regenerate from injuries, from 2006 to 2010.

She followed Heroes with Nashville, playing aspiring country singer Juliette Barnes from 2012 to 2018. The performance earned her two Golden Globe nominations.

Panettiere’s New York Times bestselling memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning was published in May this year, where she looked back at her childhood in Hollywood and her experiences with addiction, postpartum depression, abusive relationships, and the loss of custody of her daughter, Kaya, whom she shares with former heavyweight boxer Wladimir Klitschko.

Hayden Panettiere was signed up to acting and modelling agents by her mother, Lesley Vogel, when she was just four months old.

Vogel, a former soap actor, put her time into making her daughter a star – and Panettiere has been open about her early success being “all wrapped up in pleasing my mom” as she “associated praise with love”.

Panettiere cut professional ties with Vogel at the age of 19, while working on Heroes. “All I wanted was a dynamic that didn’t involve contracts, producers, boho tops, or drinking wine at industry parties,” she wrote in her memoir earlier this year.

According to the actor, Vogel “picked up her purse, clenched her jaw, and looked straight at me”, telling her: “You owe me.”

Panettiere told The Independent she “wasn’t surprised by her reaction” but called it “heartbreaking” as “having a normal relationship wasn’t something that interested her”.

The actor thought Kaya was only visiting Ukraine while she sought treatment for her addiction to alcohol and pills, when it became apparent that she would be staying there with Klitschko.
