Haze spreads as 29 areas hit unhealthy air levels, raising health concerns

MALAYSIANS in 29 areas nationwide are facing unhealthy air quality as haze intensifies, with Batu Muda in Kuala Lumpur recording the highest air pollution index (API) reading of 172 as of 7am today.

Data from the Malaysian Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) showed Johan Setia in Selangor recorded the second-highest reading at 170, followed by Petaling Jaya (165), Shah Alam and Nilai (both 164), and Cheras (163).

Other affected locations included Bukit Rambai in Melaka (162), Klang in Selangor (161), Putrajaya (160) and Seremban in Negeri Sembilan (159).

Banting in Selangor and Larkin in Johor each recorded an API reading of 157, while Pasir Gudang registered 156. Tasek in Ipoh, Perak, and Paka in Terengganu recorded readings of 155.

The widespread deterioration in air quality raises concerns for vulnerable groups, particularly children, older people and those with respiratory conditions, who are advised to reduce outdoor activities and take precautions against haze exposure.

Meanwhile, 33 other areas recorded moderate air quality, while six locations registered good readings.

Under APIMS classifications, API readings of 0 to 50 indicate good air quality, 51 to 100 moderate, 101 to 200 unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy, and readings above 300 hazardous. - October 20, 2026
