The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on Friday adjourned the hearing on a public interest litigation challenging the proposed nomination of five MLAs to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly to July 17.
When the matter came up for hearing, the Bench observed that there was insufficient time to take up the case because of other listed matters. Senior Supreme Court advocate P C Sen, appearing for the petitioner, agreed to the adjournment.
The petition was filed by Ravinder Sharma, former MLA and chief spokesperson of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee.
The Congress leader has challenged provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act that allow the Lieutenant Governor to nominate five members to the Legislative Assembly, over and above its sanctioned strength, with full voting rights. The matter was partly heard during the previous two hearings, during which the petitioner’s counsel advanced detailed arguments.
