The Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association has placed on record its “profound gratitude" to the Vacation Bench headed by Justice Sandeep Moudgil for its hearing of applications filed in the suo moto public interest litigation concerning alleged police excesses.
In a resolution, the Association said the affected parties in the petitions were practising members of the Bar. It added that at a time when advocates were facing “harassment and hardship” at the hands of the police, the Bench extended judicial compassion and afforded a patient hearing to every application filed by members of the Bar.
The Association further stated that though many applications had remained pending adjudication for a long time, the Bench disposed of almost all of them expeditiously and granted the maximum relief permissible in law.
According to the resolution, the intervention of the court not only provided immediate succour to the affected members, but also upheld the dignity and independence of the legal profession.
“The Hon’ble Court stood as the guardian of the rule of law and protected officers of the court in their hour of need,” the Association said.
Expressing deep respect for the Bench, the Association added that members of the Bar would remain indebted to the court for what it described as an act of judicial grace and for reinforcing the faith of the legal fraternity in the majesty of justice.
