United States President Donald Trump’s arrival in Malaysia for the 47th ASEAN Summit drew sharp criticism after he broke into his signature “YMCA” dance while being welcomed by local performers at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on October 26.

Former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin reacted strongly to the scene, expressing outrage at what he viewed as an insensitive display by a world leader he associated with global suffering and violence. According to Khairy, Trump’s exuberant dance and the fighter jet escort accompanying his arrival were unnecessary theatrics that ignored the grim reality of his political legacy.

Khairy reminded Malaysians of the devastating conflict in Palestine, stressing that Trump bore partial responsibility for the humanitarian crisis. He remarked that it was inappropriate for the American president to be welcomed with such enthusiasm when his policies had contributed to mass suffering and destruction.

The former minister’s comments came amid widespread debate about ASEAN’s diplomatic approach, with critics arguing that the bloc’s ceremonial hospitality towards Trump undermined its moral stance on global human rights issues. The fanfare surrounding Trump’s visit, including military salutes and cultural performances, stood in stark contrast to the outrage many still feel over his administration’s role in foreign conflicts.

Khairy further underlined his understanding of diplomatic protocol by sharing a personal photo from 2014, taken during then-President Barack Obama’s visit to Malaysia, subtly suggesting that his criticism was not rooted in ignorance of state etiquette but in principle. His message emphasized that showing respect to visiting dignitaries should not come at the cost of overlooking their controversial histories.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) Youth Chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden echoed Khairy’s disapproval, describing Trump’s public dance as embarrassing and disrespectful. His remarks reflected a growing sentiment among local political figures that Trump’s conduct — and ASEAN’s overly accommodating reception — sent the wrong message about Malaysia’s values on the global stage.

After spending just a day in Malaysia, Trump departed for Japan on October 27 as part of his multi-nation Asian tour, with South Korea marked as his next destination before returning to the United States.

For many Malaysians, however, Trump’s brief yet flamboyant visit has left behind more questions than diplomatic accomplishments — particularly about how far ASEAN should go in entertaining leaders accused of perpetuating global injustice.
