Two boys were killed after being struck by a car while riding their bicycles along Jalan Sedaka Tengah on Saturday morning (22 November), shortly after having breakfast at a nearby stall.

Yan District Police Chief Superintendent Mohamad Hamizi Abdullah confirmed the victims, aged 10 and 11, died at the scene. Their bodies were sent to the Forensic Department at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for post-mortem examinations.

“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said, adding that the 33-year-old driver has been detained for questioning and tested negative for drugs.

Victims were cycling home after eating roti canai

The victims were identified as Muhammad Izhar Adnan, 10, and his close friend Muhammad Zaid Haris Abdullah, 11. Both had reportedly just finished eating roti canai at a stall owned by Zaid’s father before cycling home.

“He told his mother he was going out for roti canai. She asked if he had money, and he said yes,” said Izhar’s father, Adnan Saad, recalling his son’s last words.

“After eating, they rode their bicycles back home. Then someone came and told us there was an accident… When I arrived, I saw two boys lying motionless by the roadside, one was my son, the other was the stall owner’s son,” he said, his voice breaking.

The tragedy has shaken the local community, especially Masjid Jamek Simpang 4 Sedaka, where Izhar was known as a helpful and active volunteer.

“This is a huge loss for us,” said mosque chairman Muhamad Nasir Ahmad. “He was very close to the imam… This morning, we were supposed to work together on something, but he said he wanted to eat roti canai first. After that, he crossed the road, and that’s when the accident happened.”

He added that Izhar often assisted with mosque activities, including recording videos for fundraising efforts.

“He was one of the key people helping us produce quality videos to raise funds for upgrading works,” he said.

Adnan described his son as friendly and always eager to help.  “He had promised to go to Gurun today for a gathering, but he never made it. Everyone here is heartbroken.”

Both boys were buried together in a single grave at the Sedaka Islamic Cemetery around 10 PM on Saturday.

Our deepest condolences go out to the families. May their souls rest in peace.
