Humanity is diverse, much like how different types of rice nourish people around the world in unique ways, each variety suits to different tastes, cultures, and needs. Unfortunately, it’s painful to see how some choose to betray the trust others freely give. Why do some people take advantage of kindness instead of honoring it?
According to Guang Ming News, an issue sparked discussion on social media, where a nasi lemak hawker took to Threads to express her frustration of a customer who repeatedly bought nasi lemak from her stall on credit, each time promising to settle the bill after receiving his salary, yet didn't pay her back. She shared that she always felt pity and sympathetic towards the customer's financial difficulties and decided to trust him, allowing him to take food on credit.
Sadly, this guy chose to betray the trust she gave, constantly finding excuses each time even when salary is disbursed, delaying the repayment. This poor hawker said the total amount of food this customer owed has now exceed RM100, and he has never paid a single cent back. This led to further frustration to the extent she said, “The food you ate has long since turned into waste, and you still don’t feel guilty?”
The post quickly caught the attention of many online users. Some criticized the customer’s shameless behavior, while others shared similar stories of customers who took advantage of their trust. One netizen commented, “When I used to be a layer cake agent, I encountered a similar situation. The customer bought and ate the cakes but refused to pay. I even had to threaten to call the police before they paid up. The worst part? This wasn’t a new customer — they were a long-time client.”
Another shared a similar situation she has encountered as well, commenting that “I had a customer who ordered macarons but only paid half the amount. It’s been over five years now, and they still haven’t cleared the balance. I send reminders every month telling them the money is still owed.” Despite financial struggles of their own, these kind hawkers still try to accommodate customers in tough times and yet such kindness somehow got exploited, leaving these small business owners out of pocket.
As a small business owner, or if you were to be a small business owner, would you allow customers to take food on credit, or you think that kindness always gets exploited? Share your thoughts and let's start the debate!
