The Health Department organised a special awareness campaign to mark World Blood Donor Day at the Civil Hospital to encourage voluntary donation.
During the district-level programme, Civil Surgeon Dr Rashmi Vij said blood donation was one of the greatest services to humanity. She said a single unit of blood could help save several precious lives and urged people to overcome myths and misconceptions related to blood donation.
Dr Vij said there was a constant need for safe blood for patients suffering from serious illnesses, victims of road accidents, individuals undergoing surgeries, women during childbirth, and patients battling diseases such as thalassemia. She stressed that regular voluntary blood donation by eligible citizens was essential to meet this demand.
She also said any healthy person between the ages of 18 and 65 years could donate blood. “Voluntary blood donation is a simple act that can make a significant difference in someone’s life,” she said.
As part of the programme, officials of the Health Department and locals took a pledge to support and promote blood donation. A street play and an awareness rally was also organised to spread the message of voluntary blood donation among the masses.
The event was attended by Assistant Civil Surgeon Dr Rajinder Pal Kaur, District Health Officer Dr Jaspal Singh, Deputy Medical Commissioner Dr Sarabjit Singh and others.
