PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry (MOH) has found no evidence to support claims of a cancer cluster at the University of Malaya Medical Centre’s (UMMC) Nuclear Medicine Unit, following a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.
In a statement today, the Ministry confirmed that its Medical Radiation Regulatory Division had conducted a thorough probe to assess radiation safety levels and compliance with the Atomic Energy Licensing Act 1984.
“The findings show that radiation safety levels at the facility are safe and well-controlled, with no critical issues related to compliance,” the Ministry said.
The MOH added that there is no technical evidence linking radiation exposure at the facility to cancer cases among staff, effectively dismissing concerns regarding a potential cluster.
The investigation verified that the facility adheres to strict safety protocols designed to protect employees and patients from unnecessary exposure.
The Ministry stressed that the safety of patients, healthcare workers, and the public remains its top priority.
It added that regular monitoring and compliance audits will continue to ensure all medical facilities nationwide meet established radiation safety standards.
The MOH also urged the public to refrain from speculation or spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary alarm, reiterating its commitment to transparency and evidence-based communication.
