KUALA LUMPUR – The Health Ministry has pulled from the shelves a spice product known as Everest Fish Curry Masala as it may contain a carcinogen known as ethylene oxide.
As of April, Everest Fish Curry Masala was imported into Malaysia while authorities have no records of MDH Curry Powder being brought in, according to the Food Safety Information System.
“Any traders, including those online, who have the products in stock must immediately stop selling and advertising.
“Ethylene oxide is often used as pest control and in spices to control microbiological contamination caused by bacteria, viruses and fungi. It is also used as an active ingredient in detergents.
“The ministry continues to monitor the content of aflatoxin, heavy metals and pesticide residues in spice products at all entry points into Malaysia.
“The carcinogen is prohibited in food items and food related materials,” said the ministry in a statement. – May 28, 2024
