A Malaysian man has tragically passed away following severe complications during his post-transplant recovery. He had undergone a bone marrow transplant to treat acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). What makes this situation particularly poignant is that the man’s 10-year-old son had bravely donated his own bone marrow in a courageous effort to save his father.
One Hope Charity & Welfare – 大山脚瑶池金母慈善基金会 took to their Facebook page to share how the young boy stood by his father throughout every stage of his medical journey.
A ‘relay of life’
The charity wrote: “During his battle against illness, Leong Jun Hao fought with all his strength, every step of the way. From his initial AML diagnosis and rounds of chemotherapy to completing the bone marrow transplant, he persevered through it all with one simple wish: to see his son grow up.”
“Earlier, his 10-year-old son, Leong Kun Xuan, bravely donated his stem cells, completing this touching ‘relay of life’ for his father.”
“The deep bond between father and son moved countless members of the public. With the community’s support, the required medical funds of RM60,000 were quickly raised.”
Following the successful collection of stem cells from the boy, the father underwent the transplant surgery and was placed under close medical observation.
Sadly, during this critical period, he developed severe complications and passed away.
Gratitude for the public support
The organisation went on to explain how the public had contributed to the family’s journey and expressed their heartfelt gratitude.
“Throughout this difficult journey, the family received tremendous care, blessings, and support from the public. From the fundraising efforts and prayers to the constant words of encouragement, this warmth from society meant a great deal to Jun Hao and his family,” the post continued.
“On behalf of the family, One Hope Charity & Welfare would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who extended their help, support, and prayers.”
