Two Black men from Minnesota, Jarvis Greenhill and Xavier Davis, had an unsettling experience while commuting home from work on a public bus. On July 13, they boarded a Jefferson Lines bus headed to downtown Fargo, North Dakota.
After showing their tickets to the bus driver, they were unexpectedly asked to move to the back of the empty bus. This request puzzled Greenhill and Davis, who had never encountered such discrimination before. Davis remarked on the irony of experiencing a scenario that he had previously only seen in history books or on television.
The incident was recorded by Davis, revealing the bus driver's name as Koby McFarlane, an employee of the bus company since 2022. McFarlane defended his actions by stating that he was following protocol, which involved loading passengers from the rear to the front of the bus. He even threatened to involve the police if Greenhill and Davis refused to comply with his instructions. Both men, who frequently used this bus line, found the driver's behavior unusual and alarming.
They emphasized that the issue at hand transcended the Black Lives Matter movement and should be viewed as a matter of basic human decency. In response to the incident, Jefferson Lines initiated an investigation. Kevin Pursey, the Director of Sales for the company, stated that there might be exceptional circumstances where a driver could ask a passenger to change seats, such as to accommodate an elderly or disabled person.
Although Greenhill and Davis complied with the driver's demands out of fear of potential legal consequences or being stranded in an unfamiliar place, they expressed deep distress over the situation. Davis, particularly, highlighted the trauma of being wrongfully arrested, emphasizing his desire to avoid such a scenario. Sadly, various incidents of misconduct have been reported on city bus lines across the United States in recent months.
In Charlotte, North Carolina, a heated argument between a passenger and a driver escalated into a violent shootout while the bus was in motion. The passenger involved in the altercation faced multiple charges, and the driver was subsequently dismissed from their position. The incident involving Greenhill and Davis serves as a reminder that discrimination can still persist in contemporary society.
It raises concerns about the treatment of passengers and highlights the need for ongoing efforts to promote equality and eradicate racial bias.
