South Korea is a country that combines art, culture, history, and emotions. From historical sites to imaginative theme parks, I encountered many significant and lovely locations on my journey that were truly touching. Each place had a distinct appeal of its own, and when combined, they create the ideal combination of education, reflection, and pure enjoyment.
Bongeunsa Temple
Bongeunsa Temple, where thousands of Korean lotus lanterns sparkled softly against the sky. In South Korea, these lanterns are usually displayed during the Lotus Lantern Festival, a celebration held in honor of Buddha’s Birthday. The lanterns symbolize light, hope, and blessings, and they are often hung in temples or along streets to create a vibrant, colorful atmosphere. It is serene and captivating to be surrounded by them, it feels like entering a living piece of art.
Gyeongbokgung Palace
Gyeongbokgung Palace, the glory of the Joseon Dynasty, was another location that really impressed me. Entering through its enormous gates feels like travelling back in time. The expansive royal grounds showcased the brilliance of Korean architecture with its magnificent halls, exquisite pavilions, and elaborate patterns. It feels like a real-life movie scenario because of the palace guards' colourful hanbok outfits, which contributed to the believability. The palace appears to be filled with historical tales about professors, monarchs, queens, and customs that influenced Korea's identity.
Pinocchio & Da Vinci Theme Park
The Pinocchio & Da Vinci Theme Park is one of the most imaginative visits. It is vibrant, playful, and full of individuality. With its fanciful sculptures and European-style buildings, the park seemed like a lighthearted getaway from everyday life. Everywhere I looked, there were creative exhibits and picturesque locations that made me recall the fairytale story-Pinocchio.
Dorasan Station
My emotions came up when I visited Dorasan Station, the location of the bullet-ridden steam train. I became aware of the breadth of Korea's history when I saw the train, which had been destroyed and stuck in time since the Korean War. Its metal body is covered with bullet holes that speak louder than words about suffering, grief, separation, and the hope that endures. It served as a reminder that travelling is about more than just seeing sites; it's also about learning about the world and its narratives.
Dorasan Station provides a special and significant experience. It is known as “the last station before North Korea”, represents the possibility of reunification. The station is immaculate, contemporary, and oddly silent as it waits for the day when trains will be able to resume their voyage in the direction of Pyongyang. As I stood there, I thought about how boundaries affect people's lives, how history endures, and how people still hope for peace.
Hwaseong Fortress
Fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that blends power and beauty. I had the impression that I explored the archery stations, climbed the watchtowers, and strolled along its long stone walls. The view from the top of the fortress, which proudly overlooks the city, is amazing. I can imagine the scene troops in the past standing where I was, defending their territory and getting ready for combat. Hwaseong Fortress served as a symbol of Korea's tenacity and resolve in addition to being a historical landmark.
