
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for the development of heat wave conditions in Haryana, particularly the western part of the state, from May 17 onwards.
Director, IMD, Chandigarh, Surender Paul, said, “There is a possibility of thunderstorm with gusty winds at 40-50 kmph. Thereafter, the temperatures will start rising. From May 17 onwards, there will be heat wave conditions in Haryana."
He added, “The western part of the state has already started witnessing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.”
According to the IMD, there is an increased likelihood of heat illness symptoms in people, who are either exposed to the sun for a prolonged period or doing heavy work. Also, there is a high health concern for infants, elderly, people with chronic diseases.
Sirsa was the hottest in the region on Thursday, comprising Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh, with a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius.
Across the state, there was a 0.6-degree Celsius rise in average maximum temperature. Though it is near normal in the state.
Following Sirsa, Narnaul was the hottest in Haryana on Thursday at 42.7 degrees Celsius, followed by Bhiwani at 42.5 degrees Celsius and Rohtak at 42 degrees Celsius. Other stations that recorded above 40 degrees Celsius included Hisar (41.7 degrees Celsius), Faridabad (41.1 degrees Celsius), Nuh (41 degrees Celsius), Charkhi Dadri (40.7 degrees Celsius), Gurugram (40.7 degrees Celsius) and Jind (40.1 degrees Celsius).
Bhiwani recorded the highest night temperature at 27 degrees Celsius, followed by Sirsa at 26.2 degrees Celsius.
