Heatwave-related deaths almost double amid record temperatures

  • Heatwave-related deaths in the UK have almost doubled this year compared to last summer, according to new figures from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
  • An estimated 2,877 heat-associated deaths occurred during the heatwaves in May and June alone, comprising 753 deaths linked to the May heatwave and 2,124 during the June heatwave.
  • These figures are nearly twice the number reported for the entire summer period of June to August last year, with the UKHSA report warning that “they are already approaching the annual record reported by UKHSA in 2022."
  • Last month was England’s hottest June on record, with temperatures hitting 37.7C in Lingwood, Norfolk, surpassing the 1957 record and equalling that of 1976.
  • The heatwaves caused several hospitals to declare critical incidents, while the London Ambulance Service recorded its highest number of life-threatening emergencies in June.
