Heavy debt believed to be motive for teacher slitting wife's throat

THE inability to manage a heavy debt load is believed to be the reason a teacher acted by slitting his wife's throat in an incident at Taman Tunas Muda, Sungai Ara, last Wednesday.

Southwest District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam, said that initial investigations found that the 30-year-old man had taken out bank loans for stock investments, in addition to carrying the burden of instalment payments for items through e-commerce platforms.

"For now, we believe the couple's quarrel was caused by debt problems. However, further investigation is still ongoing," he said when contacted on Friday.

Sazalee, however, denied claims that the suspect had debts with unlicensed money lenders.

"The claim that the suspect had borrowed from loan sharks is not true. This is because all loans were made through legal financial institutions," he added.

He said the victim, the 28-year-old wife of the suspect, is now in stable condition.

"The victim is reported to be stable but is still in the recovery process and cannot speak much. Police took her statement yesterday (Thursday), while the suspect was placed in the Psychiatric Ward of Jalan Perak Hospital for a mental health examination," he said.

Previously, Sinar Harian reported that a female teacher suffered injuries to her neck after being slashed by her husband before the man slashed himself, leaving him critically injured in an incident at Taman Tunas Muda, Sungai Ara, near here early Wednesday morning.

The incident, which occurred around 6 a.m., was noticed by the woman's mother after she heard her daughter's screams from the upstairs room of the two-story terraced house.

The victim's mother rushed upstairs to see what was happening and found her son-in-law on top of the victim (the suspect's wife).

As a result of the incident, the victim suffered neck injuries but is in stable condition, while her husband, also a teacher, is in critical condition due to severe injuries to his neck and left wrist and is receiving treatment at Penang Hospital. - August 29, 2025
