Heavy rains, floods cause power outage at Penang International Airport

GEORGE TOWN – Heavy rains led to floods hitting several parts of Penang early today after a prolonged dry spell over the past few months.

At the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas, floodwaters disrupted activities at the airport when the skybridge malfunctioned and some parts of the open-air car park were flooded.

There was also a power disruption in parts of the airport, a Malaysia Airports Bhd spokesman said.

A flight from Langkawi to Penang was diverted back to the northern island resort, according to a passenger, who preferred not to be named.

“We took off again some 30 minutes later and landed safely in Penang about 30 minutes after that. It was quite an experience,” said the passenger who works as a hotelier.

Jogging trails and open spaces were also flooded causing many residents to miss their weekend hikes and walks here.

Earlier, state executive councillor for the environment Phee Boon Poh had posted about the need for the state to be prepared for the floods in view of the warnings from the Meteorological Services Department about the northeast monsoon weather pattern.

There is also a warning of a mild version of the La Nina weather phenomenon, which is expected to arrive here in the fourth quarter of this year. – The Vibes, September 24, 2022
