Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor is facing criticism for his actions towards a young woman who approached him for aid. The incident occurred last Saturday when Sanusi swatted the woman's head with a stack of folded papers.
Wanita PKR central communications director Noraini Nordin called on Sanusi to apologize for his behavior, stating that it was wrong, impolite, and disrespectful to the dignity of women. Noraini highlighted that the woman and her family would have experienced embarrassment due to the public nature of the incident. As the Menteri Besar, Sanusi's actions were deemed inappropriate and revealed a lack of proper leadership, especially when dealing with the public, particularly women. Wanita PKR urged all women in the country to voice their objections to Sanusi's actions in order to defend the dignity of women. Muda deputy president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz also criticized Sanusi, describing his antics as rude. She emphasized that Sanusi should have exercised better manners when joking with the public, rather than dismissing his behavior as mere banter.
In response to the criticism, Sanusi defended himself by stating that he was joking with the young female student. He claimed that he chided her for seeking assistance at the last minute and that hitting her with a piece of paper was meant as a lighthearted gesture. He attempted to downplay the incident by comparing it to hitting her with a piece of wood.
The incident was captured in an 18-second video and quickly spread on social media platforms, leading to widespread criticism and calls for Sanusi to apologize. Many individuals expressed their disapproval of his actions, highlighting the need for dignified and respectful behavior towards women. This incident raises important issues regarding leadership and the treatment of women in public settings.
It is essential for leaders to set an example by conducting themselves with decorum and respect, particularly when interacting with the public. By addressing this incident and holding leaders accountable for their actions, society can strive for greater equality and dignity for all individuals, regardless of gender.
