Tucked above a lottery shop in Section 17, Ossu! is the kind of place you’d only find if someone told you about it. There is no shouty exterior or social media gimmick, just the smell of grilled meat and the chatter of regulars who know a good thing when they see it.
What keeps them coming back? Skewers that start from only RM3.90 and quality that punches far above that price tag.
Fallopian tubes, really?

Of Ossu!’s more adventurous offerings, the Cochin (RM9.90) is one you will be hard-pressed to find in most other izakaya restaurants. At first glance, it looks like a typical skewer, until you notice the orange sac at the tip. That’s because these are chicken fallopian tubes.
Unusual as it sounds, the Cochin has a loyal following. Lightly grilled, it has a chewy bite that’s surprisingly enjoyable, while the yolk-like sac bursts with rich, creamy flavour when you bite into it. Odd, yes, but oddly satisfying too.
Savoury skewers to look out for

Any self-respecting yakitori will have a good selection of perfectly charred skewers. Ossu! doesn’t drop the ball on this. In fact, it uses Binchotan charcoal to grill its skewers, prized for its ability to preserve the meat’s natural taste while achieving that perfect smoky char.
Of the skewers, the Pork Tsukune (RM7.90) is the one which sends tongues wagging the most. This comes with an egg yolk dip, which is always a plus. The meatballs themselves taste sweet and come in chunky portions. You’ll probably want seconds—or thirds.
Also worth a mention are the Bacon Enoki (RM5.90) and Bacon Tomato (RM6.90). The former has the earthy chewiness that most fungi display, while the latter was just naturally tangy. The bacon was nothing to sneeze at, of course, having the right amount of grease and juice in each streak.
Seafood and rice, the perfect combo

Seafood fans aren’t left out either. The Hotate Yaki (RM13.90), or grilled scallops, come lightly charred with a buttery texture that complements the scallops’ natural sweetness. It’s a treat that will have you hankering for more.
If you want some carbs to fill you up, and the Garlic Fried Rice (RM6.90) hits the right spot. Soft, fluffy, and full of flavour, it rivals the wok hei standard of any good Japanese diner. Nothing bland about it.
Is Ossu! worth checking out?

If you are a diner concerned with budget, Ossu! is definitely an izakaya worth checking out for a meal that is worth every penny. On top of that, co-owner Andrew embodies the spirit of omotenashi—service with a smile—so don’t be shy to say hi (and maybe tell him that MFT sent you).
