The High Court is poised to deliver its decision on the appeal of Rumah Bonda founder Siti Bainun Ahd Razali, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for neglecting and abusing a teenage girl with Down Syndrome known as Bella. The verdict, scheduled for May 2, 2024 10 a.m., will be delivered by Judge Datuk Noorin Badaruddin.
This development comes after the court heard submissions from both the prosecution and defence on March 7 regarding Siti Bainun's appeal against her conviction and sentence. On May 3, 2023, Sessions Court Judge Izralizam Sanusi had ordered Siti Bainun to be immediately sent to Kajang Prison to serve her 12-year sentence, following the dismissal of her application to stay the sentence.
Subsequently, on May 23, 2023, the High Court rejected Siti Bainun's application to stay the prison sentence, citing the absence of any special or exceptional circumstances to warrant such action. In addition to the prison term, Siti Bainun was ordered to sign an RM5,000 good behavior bond for five years with one surety. She was also instructed to complete 200 hours of community service within six months after serving her prison sentence.
Deputy Public Prosecutors Zahida Zakaria, Nor Azizah Mohamad, and Analia Kamaruddin led the prosecution in this case, while Siti Bainun was represented by lawyers Haijan Omar, Nur A’minahtul Mardiah Md Noor, and Nurul Hafidzah Hassan.
The case against Siti Bainun stemmed from her actions against Bella, 13, in a condominium unit in Wangsa Maju between February and June 2021. Bella, who has Down Syndrome, was the victim of neglect and abuse, leading to the conviction and subsequent sentencing of Siti Bainun.
The verdict will be a crucial moment in this high-profile case, with many awaiting the court's decision on Siti Bainun's appeal. The outcome will not only impact the parties involved but also serve as a reminder of the importance of upholding justice and protecting the rights of vulnerable individuals in society.
