High Potential fans will have to wait a little longer for the return of Kaitlin Olson’s Morgan Gillory.
The hit police show, which stars Olson as a quirky, highly intelligent single mother who is hired by the LAPD as a consultant to solve difficult crimes concluded its second season April 7 with a dramatic cliffhanger ending.
A third season was swiftly confirmed by ABC, but the network has now announced that the series will not return until 2027.
No specific release date has been set for the third season premiere, although it has been revealed that a special episode of the show will air immediately after Super Bowl LXI on Sunday, February 14.
The Independent has approached ABC for comment.
Speaking after the second season ended, Olson told People: “So many cliffhangers, I know!... There are so many places that we can go with this next season. It's very exciting and it definitely starts with, does Wagner make it or not?”
*Warning: major spoilers to follow for the season two finale of High Potential*
The end of the finale saw Captain Nick Wagner (Steve Howey) gravely injured after being shot during a secret meeting with an FBI source, whom his corrupt politician father connected him with for information on Morgan’s missing ex. Morgan then arrived at the scene to find Wagner bleeding out.
While Wagner’s fate is left uncertain, the episode marked Howey’s final appearance as a series regular, according to Deadline. Howey joined as a series regular last October on a one-year contract, which has now expired, the outlet reported. Sources told Deadline that it is unclear whether he will leave the show for good or whether he could return as a guest star next season.
Of introducing Wagner, Olson told Variety: “We wanted to have a little bit of a mystery, and we also wanted to stump Morgan. It was very important to me that she’s not always right about everything. I like that she’s a very intelligent person, and she’s also human and doesn’t know whether to trust this man.
“Who is he? Does he need something from her? Is he actually interested in her? So that was fun to explore and play with. It’s always more fun to have people actually fall for each other, and then it’s heartbreaking to have it be ripped apart.”
In season two’s penultimate episode, Morgan and Wagner shared their first and only kiss.
High Potential has been a ratings success for ABC since its 2024 debut.
