A police officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak, pleaded not guilty today in the High Court to charges of murdering a Form Five student in a road crash that occurred near a school last year.

Mohd Nazri, 46, faces charges of murdering Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie, a 17-year-old student, on Jalan Taman Jati 1, near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Jati in Ipoh. The incident took place between 12:05 PM and 12:40 PM on December 15, 2023.

The charge is brought under Section 302 of the Penal Code. If found guilty, this section prescribes a death sentence or imprisonment ranging from a minimum of 30 years to a maximum of 40 years. Additionally, if the death penalty is not imposed, the guilty party must receive at least 12 lashes.

The presiding judge, Bhupindar Singh Gurcharan Singh Preet, scheduled a 30-day trial set to run from November 4 to January 17 next year. A preliminary mention is set for July 1 to allow for the submission of necessary documents.

Earlier in the session, Deputy Public Prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz requested the court for a month to complete the document submission, stating that the prosecution intends to call 60 witnesses. “The prosecution needs time to finalize the list of witnesses and documents to hand over to the defence lawyer. We need to examine the documents thoroughly as this case involves numerous witnesses and experts,” Afzainizam explained.

Assisting Afzainizam are deputy public prosecutors Saiful Akmal Mod Said and Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani. Representing Mohd Nazri, lawyer Jacky Loi Yap Loong, supported by Lim Chi Chau and M. Kuhan, informed the court that a notice had been filed regarding their client's bail application. However, the prosecution indicated they had not received an affidavit concerning the bail notice.

In response, Judge Bhupindar Singh instructed both parties to complete the exchange of affidavits before he could decide on the bail application.

Also present at the hearing were lawyers Yasmin Khalid and Amira Najwafitri Amir Arif, representing the victim’s family in a watching brief. The court proceedings attracted considerable attention due to the high-profile nature of the case and the serious charges involved. — Bernama
