Toh Puan Na’imah Abdul Khalid, wife of former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, faced the sessions court on January 23, where she pleaded not guilty to charges of violating a notice from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). The charges stem from an alleged failure to declare her assets, including Menara Ilham, two companies—Ilham Tower Sdn Bhd and Ilham Baru Sdn Bhd—two luxury Mercedes Benz cars, a residence in Persiaran Bukit Tunku, four land lots in Bukit Tunku, and one lot each in Penang and Taman Tun Dr Ismail.
The accusation specifically points to Na’imah deliberately providing a written statement under oath that did not adhere to the terms of a MACC notice dated November 8, 2023. This notice, dispatched by a Commissioner-ranked officer on November 1, 2023, demanded the declaration of assets. The charges against Na’imah fall under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act, with potential consequences of a maximum jail term of up to five years and a fine not exceeding RM100,000 if she is convicted. The alleged offence took place on December 13, 2023.
On January 10, Na’imah and her two sons appeared at the MACC headquarters to provide statements in relation to the commission's ongoing inquiry into her husband, Tun Daim Zainuddin, a prominent businessman. The MACC's Anti-Money Laundering Division Director, Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin, confirmed that statements from Daim's wife and sons were obtained to aid investigations under anti-money laundering laws.
The roots of the investigation into Tun Daim Zainuddin can be traced back to information gleaned from the Pandora Papers. The case's investigation papers were initiated in February of the previous year, according to the MACC.
