The spouse of Tan Sri Azam Baki, Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), has been identified as the investigating officer in the corruption trial of Datuk Seri Najib Razak. This revelation surfaced during the proceedings at the High Court, where Najib's lead counsel, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, informed the court of Nur Aida Arifin's inability to testify due to illness.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib shared with the court that the 37-year-old witness had been granted a two-day medical leave by her doctor, preventing her from continuing her testimony. Shafee confirmed the information with Azam, stating that Nur Aida was unwell due to a contagious fever.

In her witness statement, Nur Aida detailed her career progression at the MACC, explaining that she was initially placed in the Excellence and Professionalism Division before being transferred to the Investigation Division on April 1, 2010. Later, she moved to the Anti-Money Laundering Prevention Division from August 1, 2023, onward, becoming a Certified Financial Investigator in 2016.

Regarding the 1MDB investigation, she outlined its inception in August 2015, with Deputy Commissioner Mohd Nasharudin Amir serving as the investigating officer. At that time, Nur Aida held the role of assistant investigating officer for the case. On May 14, 2018, she assumed the role of investigating officer, succeeding Nasharudin.

Najib, facing trial on 25 charges of abuse of power and money laundering, is accused of involvement in the misappropriation of 1MDB funds totaling RM2.28 billion, deposited into his AmBank accounts between February 2011 and December 2014.

During the court proceedings, Judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah urged the prosecution to contact the doctor who issued Nur Aida's medical chit to clarify any discrepancies in the document. The trial is set to continue, with the absence of Nur Aida impacting the course of testimony.
