KUALA LUMPUR – A warning for a high tide and possible floods has been issued for Klang and Kuala Selangor starting from tomorrow and into the coming week.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said residents in these areas should be on alert as sea tides are expected to breach 5m in height.
The phenomenon is expected to occur throughout the next week as part of the northeast monsoon.
“We have issued warnings about this phenomenon where tides of more than 5m are expected, higher than last year at only 4.8m.
“State agencies around Klang, Kuala Selangor and surrounding areas where floods can strike in the event of high tides have also been warned,” Amirudin was quoted saying by SelangorKini after visiting a flood mitigation project at Sg Melawis in Klang today.
A chart issued by the Selangor state secretary’s office shows that high tides at Port Klang are predicted to reach 5.5m at 7.18am this Monday. For the rest of the week, the highest tide levels are projected to hit 5.3 or 5.4m.
Coastal Klang, as well as parts of Klang Valley inland have been hit by floods several times this year due to heavier than usual rainfall.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department recently said large-scale floods can be expected in the country from mid-November.
